FAQ Print
KidsWheels FAQ's are not designed to answer all questions, feel free to E-mail us with any additional questions that you may have or contact the manufacturer of your Ride On Toy Car or Battery Manufacturer.

1) What is the average "ride time" on Children's Ride On Toy Car ?

Ride time is effected by a number of variables such as the child's weight, terrain, state of battery charge and temperature. You can normally expect about 1 hour +, under average riding conditions.

2.) How long will my ride toy batteries last under normal use?

The more often the battery is used, the longer it will last. Using the rechargeable battery or batteries once or twice a year will actually shorten the life span of the battery. Recharge the battery at the end of every day that it is used, even if it was only used for 20 minutes. The battery will not build up a "memory" effect. The battery is the same type of battery found in an automobile. The battery should never be completely drained of power. If the batteries are not being used for a long period, recharge them at least once a month for 16 hours.

Rechargeable battery life span is directly related to the average depth of discharge. If the batteries are repeatedly discharged beyond the 50% threshold they will last a short time. If the batteries are fully discharged repeatedly the will only last weeks or months before complete failure to hold a charge. The shallower the discharge the longer the battery life. Properly charged and discharged batteries will last about two to three years.

The newer type of sealed battery uses "Absorbed Glass Mat" and are referred to as AGM Rechargeable Batteries. These batteries have a very fine fiber Boron-Silicate glass mat between the plates. These type of batteries have all the advantages of gelled, but are spill proof and can take much more abuse. These are also called "starved electrolyte", as the mat is about 95% saturated rather than fully soaked with acid.

3.) DO NOT, DO NOT, attempt to charge your batteries with an automobile type charger, use only the charger supplied with your Ride on Toy. Refer to your owners manual for charging instructions. Follow Manufacturers Battery Charging instructions.

4.) When should I recharge my ride toy batteries ?

A.) After each use, regardless of how long the vehicle is used. The more often the batteries are used, the longer they will last. Using the batteries once or twice a year will actually shorten the life span of the battery.

B.) When the Riding Toy starts to loose power and runs sluggishly.

C.) DO NOT, DO NOT, run the batteries down completely. The battery will not build up a "memory effect". The battery is the same type of battery found in an automobile.

D.) DO NOT, DO NOT, store your child's vehicle with discharged batteries, fully charge them before storage and once a month thereafter.

5.) How long should I charge my ride toy batteries ?

Battery Charging should never be for less then 12 hours or more than 18 hours at a time. Recharging less then 12 hours will decrease the life of the batteries. Recharging for more than 18 hours consecutively will begin to damage the battery cells. Refer to Manufacturer's charging instruction for proper charging times and procedures.

When charging, DO NOT, DO NOT leave the batteries on the charger more then indicated by the Manufacturers instructions, permanent damage will result.

6.) How do I check my ride toy batteries.

Use the following table to determine a batteries state of charge, you must use a good quality digital DC voltmeter, values are an approximation. Check your batteries after giving them a full charge, values under 11.89 Volts indicate 0% charge.

Open circuit Approximate Battery Voltage State of charge for a 12 Volt Battery (single battery or series set up).

12.75 Volts 100%

12.50 Volts 75%

12.25 Volts 50%

12.00 Volts 25%

For 6V batteries divide by 1/2 the open circuit voltage.

7.) How do I check the recharger?

Check the charger battery end leads with a digital volt meter, readings should range between 5.8 and 6.3 V for six volt chargers and 11.3 and 12.6 for 12V chargers.

Note: If your batteries have not been charged for a long period of time or have been fully discharged check the charger after approximately one hour of operation. The charger should be warm to the touch, if it is hot disconnect it from the wall outlet and battery immediately.

8.) How do I know if the electrical brakes are working?

Lift the rear wheels off the ground and apply the accelerator in high gear and release. The rear wheels should come to an abrupt stop within one revolution. If the wheels gradually coast to a halt the brake resistor is either defective or disconnected.

9.) The Vehicle keeps turning itself off !

All quality Vehicles have automatic thermal protection. If the machine is motion arrested, over loaded or traveling over soft terrain or thick grass it will automatically shut down when it reaches its electrical limitation. This feature is for the protection of your child, DO NOT alter or remove any components in order to override this Safety Feature that is built into your particular machine.

10.) My 1998 and newer ride on's wheels seem to slip alot when the "Little One" takes off !

Unlike the older models most of the current 12 V machines run on constant 12 Volts. Speed variation is now achieved by putting the Motors in Series or Parallel mode and not the batteries. The Result is that the wheel with least traction gets the most power on take off in low gear and reverse (Series mode), in high gear both motors (parallel mode) get the same amount of power and less wheel slip.

11.) How can I increase the traction on my childs ride on toy machine ?

For Safety reasons all Machines are designed to "slip" in the turns. If they could not "slip" the would be inclined to tip over at high speeds when turned hard in either direction. Additionally, the gearboxes and motors are designed with this "slip" in mind and would be damaged if the wheels had any more traction then they are designed to have.
